In late August, skēnē participated in the fifth anniversary edition of SYSTEMA in Marseille. Operating as a decentralised curatorial chain, this iteration of the fair examined the structural mechanics of collective expansion by reconnecting with past participants. Each was invited to nominate an independent, artist-run initiative to join the assembly, turning the act of invitation into an operative tool to extend pre-existing networks and foster new institutional encounters. Following a generous nomination by our peers at Closing Soon, we were delighted to continue our ongoing collaboration with Stacey de Voe.
Stacey de Voe’s contribution is part of her long-term artistic research, THE SPONTANEOUS DANCE FALLS. Working across sculpture, sound, installation, and performance, the project situates dance and collective movement as both historical sites of conflict and potential horizons for a political imagination, specifically tracing these dynamics through the histories of the textile industry and feminised labour.
De Voe assesses how our relations to one another have been limited by privatisation and exclusion, where the spontaneity of the ‘public realm’ has depended on our capacity to absorb the effects of labour and restriction on our bodies without ever seeming to tire. By attending to discrepancies, gaps, and contradictions in archival sources, the project assembles a fragmented yet critical historiography of movement not just as form but as a political tool.
